Atherton Tablelands Top 5 Waterfalls & The Crater

The Atherton Tablelands are part of the Great Dividing Range in Queensland, Australia. Chasing an adventure is easy here because there’s so much to see all in one area.

1) Millaa Millaa Falls

Wow! The first waterfall we came across on the famous waterfall circuit (17km drive featuring 3 waterfalls) was Millaa Millaa Falls. We could see straight away why it’s considered the masterpiece of the circuit, as the waterfall plunges into a waterhole perfect for swimming.

Distance: short walk from the car park.

Access from Theresa Creek Road.

2) Zillie Falls

Zillie Falls is really pretty with views of the cascading falls and surrounding rainforest. Unfortunately, it’s not suitable for swimming but you can get some awesome photos for your socials.

Distance: short walk from car park. Access from Theresa Creek Road.

3) Ellinjaa Falls

Last on the circuit is Ellinjaa Falls, where you can get up close after a small stroll through the rainforest. A shallow pool forms at the base, which is suitable for a dip to cool off on hot days. Apparently, there’s a hidden ledge behind the cascade, which we only found out after we had left. If you found it please leave a comment.

Distance: 400m return. Access from Theresa Creek Road

4) Big Millstream Falls

Wow! Wow! Wow! check out Big Millstream Falls, Australia’s widest single drop waterfall. It was created by old basalt lava flow. These falls for some reason are not as popular as the others but we think they’re just as spectacular. You can’t get down to the bottom of the falls but there’s a lookout over the falls. If you want to swim you can swim at the top of the falls.

Distance: 680m return. Access from Kennedy Highway south west of Ravenshoe.

5) Dinner Falls

Dinner Falls is only a 30min drive from Atherton in the Mount Hypipamee National Park. It’s a really lovely walk through the forest which gives you the opportunity to walk along a trio of water cascades. It’s an easy walk which takes you on a loop to the crater, see below.

Distance: 1.2km. Access from Kennedy Highway, south of Atherton.

THE CRATER

The path to Dinner Falls connects to the Crater walk, at Mount Hypipamee National Park. There’s an awesome platform 130m above the crater, which gives excellent viewing. The crater is approx 70m across and is covered in a lake 70m deep. Apparently, the lake supports a particular shrimp population that may not be found anywhere else on Earth.

Distance: 800m return walk. Access from Kennedy Highway, south of Atherton.
